How Arcade Games Started
By Stacy Landis of L & L Marketplace
The first arcade game was the game Computer Space which proved to be difficult to understand and eventually failed. Pong was the first successful commercial arcade game in 1971-72 and then moved on to become one of the biggest rages of the time. The games where mostly simple in design, but gave you plenty of raw game time. Remember all those hours lost to playing arcade games? Those where the days! This was all started by Atari, which was started after the fail of the Computer Space game. It took two years before Tank came out and then the following year 1975 they came out with Gunfight, which was the first two player arcade game. In 1976, Racer was invented which was the first race game which put you in the “first person” by looking at the road as if you were in the car. Breakout was the next game also in 1976 invented by the founders of Apple Computer. Thanks to the arcade game Space Invaders arcade was spreading into the restaurants and bowling alleys and the home thanks to the Atari 2600. In 1978, the game of X’s and O’s was transformed into Football the arcade game which “scrolled” through the game as if you were moving on the screen. This became a huge commercial hit and the invention of the “scrolling” screen and the track ball made Atari a lot of money of the years with the patents on these concepts. In 1980, Battlezone was the first arcade game with 3-D interactive graphics and two color displays. The United States Armed Forces were so impressed by the game that they commissioned Atari to build specially modified and upgraded versions for use in tank training. This is the year of Pac-man also. Invented by Toru Iwatani and it was licensed from Namco. This game was a hit around the world and brought about cartoons and many sequel games. The year 1983 gave us Dragon’s Lair, which gave us movie like qualities in an arcade game. This was a game beyond its time and the technology was the start of what we know today in our gaming systems. In 1991, Cinematronics Warrior was the first one-on-one fighting arcade game. Now, games are made with video cards and modern technology that allows us to almost be in-the-moment of the game with the graphics and sound. With the invention of the WII, which allows us to participate in the game as if we were actually doing the action ourselves. It will be interesting to see how they will improve on the next new game or console.
